The moment aluminium meets air, a thin, transparent oxide layer forms on its surface. Unlike rust on steel that layer does not flake away; it seals the metal beneath and halts corrosion by itself. That is the real reason aluminium is preferred by the sea.

A completely closed surface reduces the view to nothing but catches the wind like a sail and puts a large overturning moment on the uprights. Aluminium louvres in direct contact with a steel fixing lead to galvanic corrosion; with moisture between two metals it is the aluminium that is sacrificed. That is why we make the connections with aluminium or stainless components, using insulating washers where they are needed.
