What sets the aperture size in a sports cage is not security but the ball being played. The aperture has to be noticeably smaller than the diameter of that ball; otherwise the ball wedges into the mesh and every attempt to free it tires the wire a little more.
The cage does not have to be the same height on every side of the pitch. A line raised behind the goals and along the road gives a more economical result than enclosing the whole pitch at that height, and it closes the ground off less.
