Razor Wire Barrier
Razor wire makes the top of a fence impossible to climb and raises the deterrence of an existing line at low cost.
Razor wire is made by pressing sharp-edged blades onto a galvanised steel core strip. Its purpose is not to injure but to leave no safe point to hold; unable to find anywhere to put a hand, the climber gives up before the attempt has begun.
There are two basic types. The concertina type forms a bulky obstacle when it is opened out and is the form most widely used above walls. The flat wrap type spreads in a single plane; it takes up less room on narrow cranked arms and above fences, and looks calmer.
Whether the barrier works depends on the angle it is mounted at. If the cranked arm is fitted leaning outwards, a climber pulls the wire onto themselves with their own weight; fitted leaning inwards, the same wire makes leaving from the inside harder instead. We decide which way it should face according to the risk on the site.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. We add cranked arms to the tops of the existing posts and carry the razor wire above the line, so there is no need to take the fence down. The condition of the posts is checked on site and reinforced if necessary.
If a bulky obstacle is wanted above a wall, the concertina type gives stronger deterrence. Where space is tight, where the look of the line matters, or where there is a risk of overhang onto a neighbouring plot, the flat wrap type suits better.
