PVC Coated Wire Mesh
The PVC drawn over galvanised wire protects the fence from corrosion and from the risk of sharp wire ends at the same time.
Protection on PVC coated wire mesh has two layers: the steel wire inside is galvanised first, then PVC is drawn over it. The outer plastic layer keeps water away from the wire, while the galvanising stays in reserve as a second line of defence wherever the plastic is cut.
Aperture and wire gauge are chosen together. A small aperture makes climbing and the passage of small animals harder but means more wire in the same metre; a large aperture is economical, leaves the view open and is usually enough for enclosing land. At 3.5 mm the wire resists impact and cutting better than 3 mm.
How woven mesh performs shows up during installation. If the roll is fixed to the posts without being strained with line wire it sags within a few seasons and leaves a gap along the bottom edge. Because corner posts take the entire tension load of the run, they are set in concrete footings and braced with struts.
Frequently asked questions
For enclosing land and gardens, 55, 65 and 75 mm are usually enough. Where small animals have to be kept out or climbing needs to be made harder, we recommend apertures of 35 and 45 mm.
The flexible structure of woven mesh lets it follow the slope, so the stepping a panel fence needs is unnecessary on most hillsides. Where the change in level steepens we tighten the post spacing and bring the bottom line wire closer to the ground.
